GCSE PREPARATION THROUGH CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC IMMERSION IN BEIJING AND KUNMING

Trip Overview
In the words of the Lao Tzu, “a path traveled is no longer the same path, a road traveled is no longer the same road.” Old neighborhoods of wooden houses are demolished to make way for 80-story buildings. Streets once filled with bicycles are now jammed with shiny new cars. Buddhist monks read ancient sutras from iPads, and millions of rural farmers move between home and work in the city to support their families. New highways, rail lines and airports are under construction virtually all the time, everywhere, in a race to keep up with 1.4 billion people on the move. If you want to understand the world we live in, there’s no way to ignore China. Throughout its long history, China has inspired curiosity and fascination in travelers, seekers, merchants, and dreamers like few other places.
This program does more than introduce the contemporary China that is seen in the country’s ever-expanding cities; we gain a firsthand understanding of the country’s diverse peoples and cultures, moving through different landscapes. Immersive travel experiences are balanced with a strong language practice and an interdisciplinary exploration of modern Chinese history and economic development, society, and cultural traditions. This program moves from East to West, following a chronological and developmental history of China from the glittering cityscape of Beijing, to Kunming, the City of Eternal Spring, and ending in the Yi ethnic minority village of Damoyu. Along the way, students learn about history, government, economy, arts, and the many ethnic minority cultures of Yunnan, and enjoy hands-on cultural experiences ranging from culinary arts, calligraphy, tea ceremony, and martial arts.

Beijing 北京 + Xiangshuihu 响水湖
Orientation & Skill-Building: Exploring the Great Wall & Beijing
Emerging from the airport in Beijing, we board a private bus and escape the bustling city to a rustic guesthouse along a remote, unrestored section of the Great Wall. Here we are welcomed into the Kou family guesthouse where we are warmed by their family hospitality and homemade traditional Northeastern Chinese cuisine. Our first 48 hours in China are focused on orientation and tone-setting, where we focus on building a supportive and aligned group container, assign leadership roles, and introduce important health, safety, and cultural considerations. From our exploration of the Great Wall, we head into Beijing to explore the city and delve more deeply into foundational themes related to politics, history and economy. We visit cultural and historical landmarks including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and hutong communities nestled in the shadows of skyscrapers.

Urban Homestay in Kunming: Experiencing family life and Chinese cultural immersion
From Beijing, we travel to Kunming and engage in a homestay briefing, preparing students for a 5-day homestay with Dragons host families. Many of these families have children and have been hosting Dragons students for many years. They support students’ goals of cultural and linguistic immersion and make them feel at home with a Chinese family. The following four days are a deep immersion into Chinese culture, focusing on themes such as Chinese Cuisines, Kung Fu, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The group meets at the program house every morning for a check-in and language study, followed by the day’s activities which include outings to visit markets, temples, and parks. Students will experience hands-on learning through practicing calligraphy, traditional instruments, cooking, and martial arts with skilled teachers. In the late afternoon, they will return to their host families for dinner. On the final day of our time in Kunming, we will enjoy a farewell dinner with all host families.

Damoyu 大墨雨
Transference: A taste of rural, ethnic China in Damoyu Village
After saying goodbye to host families, the group will travel approximately 1 hour from Kunming to Damoyu, an Yi ethnic minority village in the hills above the city. Here, the pace of life slows. Young people and families from urban China have chosen to live here and enjoy the rural, agricultural life, and thus this village features permaculture farms, natural buildings, and more. Students will tour the village and speak with “old” Yi ethnic and “new” relocated urban residents about the village’s history and present. They will learn about natural building and sustainable farming practices, pick fresh vegetables, and have the opportunity to make their own dinner, alongside local hosts. This phase of the program is focused on transference, integrating and synthesizing our journey together, making meaning of our experiences, and preparing for the return home. We’ll enjoy a final meal and closing ceremony before the group departs from the Kunming Airport.
Day 10 - Damoyu
Leaving our host families, we travel via bus to an Yi ethnic minority village called Damoyu. Upon arrival, we will tour the village to learn about its history and present. We will learn about sustainable foods, pick fresh vegetables, and make our own dinner with help from local cooks. Participate in hands-on agricultural activities to understand the lived experiences of villagers in Damoyu. Commence reflection & transference activities, including a final closing ceremony.
Day 11 - Kunming
Prepare for the return home. Travel by bus to Kunming Changshui International Airport for departure.
